Are the Pogues about to go full Kook?
That’s the question at hand ahead of Outer Banks‘ upcoming Season 4, which will catch up with the North Carolina teens as they enjoy the cash and fame that finding the treasure of El Dorado brought them.
But whether the kids from The Cut will adopt the Kook (that’s “well-off,” if you don’t speak Outer Banks) lifestyle is only one of the loose ends left at the conclusion of the Netflix series’ third season. Both John B.’s dad, Big John, and Sarah’s dad, Ward, died in the Season 3 finale, losses that both of the teens must wrestle with in the coming episodes. And that’s before you consider that another treasure hunt —a ship’s journal allegedly belonging to the pirate Blackbeard —fell into their laps in the final moments of the season.

The adventure series was renewed for a fourth season even before Season 3 premiered. “The Pogues are enjoying an adventure of a lifetime, and we now get to map out more twists and turns as the joyride continues into Season 4 of Outer Banks,” creators/showrunners Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shanon Burke said in a statement at the time. “Thank you to Netflix, our cast, and the amazing fans who helped to make this happen.”
Below, we’ve gathered all of the important intel you need ahead of Outer Banks‘ return. And make sure to bookmark the post: We’ll keep it updated with the latest on those swimming, surfing, sunning, scared-of-nothing teens!
Where did Outer Banks Season 3 leave off?
Season 3 was a big one for John B. and his friends, who went on a search for the famed El Dorado. And they found it, alongside the back-from-the-dead Big John, deep in a South American jungle. But Ward Cameron also was gunning for the treasure, as was the deadly Singh. A few gunfights later, Ward (and maybe Singh) were dead, and Big John followed them into the hereafter as the teens made their way back to civilization.
After an 18-month time jump, we caught up with the Pogues, who had returned to the Outer Banks and were famous for finding the storied City of Gold. Pope and Cleo were a romantic pair, and he was planning on going to school. JJ bought a charter boat. Kiara was saving sea turtles. (JJ and Kiara? Also a romantic pair.) And Sarah and John B. owned a surf shop.
But all of that was poised to change when a man came to them with a 1718 ship’s log that looked like it belonged to Edward Teach, also known as the pirate Blackbeard. (Read a full finale recap.)
The story ended at a “really, really painful place of resolve” for Sarah, Madelyn Cline, who plays the character, told TVLine after the finale began streaming. “Family is just this hollow pain, getting hurt time and time and time again.”
