Whether you’re a long-time pro or a beginner gardener, any home grower can benefit from an indoor greenhouse. Ryan McEnaney, fifth-generation plantsman, garden designer, and author, explains the benefits of an indoor greenhouse.
"Creating a controlled environment to help plants thrive that would otherwise suffer, providing a growing space for those that don’t have an outdoor area to garden, overwintering tender plants in cool climates, growing edibles near the kitchen, and more.”
From grow lights to material to dimensions, there are a lot of factors to consider when identifying the best indoor greenhouses. After speaking to experts and researching dozens of products, we found the best options on the market.

Why You Should Get It
Many accessories are included, such as a mechanical timer, casters, thermo-hygrometer, waterproof mats, hook and loop tape, and grow lights.
Keep in Mind
Some may not prefer the industrial look if it’s going to be more visible.
The best indoor greenhouse overall is the Barrina Mini Greenhouse, which includes everything you need to be a successful grower. The greenhouse itself has a total weight capacity of 220 pounds and comes with a two-year warranty. No handiness is required for assembly, as no tools are needed.
All four shelves have guardrails to protect the plants from falling and can be adjusted as needed, allowing space for taller plants. The shelves are metal, while the tent over it is constructed from durable, high-transmittance EVA material that maintains a humid environment for your plants.
Because it’s transparent, you can easily take a peek and check on your plants’ progress. When you need to access them, you can unzip the front and roll up the door. There’s no need to worry about ventilation, because there are mesh windows with covers that can be raised or lowered.
Six grow lights are included—two per shelf underside—which helps provide the exact amount of light your plants need to grow. They can be hung three different ways. The lights even have reflectors, making them even more efficient while also protecting your eyes from the brightness.
Plenty of other accessories are included to help your plants grow as successfully as possible. Thanks to the mechanical timer, you can put the lights on a schedule, and you also get a thermo-hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity.
Hook and loop tape for cable management keeps your greenhouse looking tidy, while waterproof PP mats protect your grow lights from water damage. You can even choose to install casters, which make transporting the greenhouse easy and can be locked when not in use.
The only potential con is that this greenhouse has a very bare bones, industrial look that some may not prefer if it’s going to be in a more public part of their home.

Key Terms to Know
- Grow light: Available in different spectrums and strengths, this light is used to provide artificial sun to plants in order for them to grow faster.
- Polycarbonate: A substitute for glass, this transparent material is more durable, better diffuses light, and provides more insulation.
Why You Should Get It
Smart details like a roll-up door and hanging rod make it a win, particularly for the price.
Keep in Mind
It may need to be anchored for extra stability.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, the Ohuhu Mini Greenhouse is a great choice. The structure features four tiers and a mesh polyethylene cover that’s corrosion resistant, low temperature resistant, waterproof, and ultraviolet proof.
The cover also features a zippered roll-up door (with a strap to keep it open) that makes it easy to check on plants. Each shelf has a capacity of 22 pounds, measures 24 x 4 x 17.3 inches, and can be stabilized with eight fixing buckles.
You can either opt for the single layer roof or spring for the double layer roof, which comes with an interior hanging rod at the top for structural stability and grow lights or fans. Assembly—and disassembly—is a breeze.
Anchoring the shelf to the wall is an extra step in the assembly process, but it will offer more stability and help prevent the shelf from toppling over. The sand bag pouches on the bottom sides also help provide additional support.

Why You Should Get It
The vintage-looking hardware, bottom drawer, and multiple color options make this greenhouse look more like a regular cabinet.
Keep in Mind
Fixed shelves can’t be adjusted as certain plants grow.
If you’re going to invest in an indoor greenhouse, it should be both attractive and functional. The ornate hardware on the MCombo Cold Frame Greenhouse makes it look like an everyday cabinet, while the two distinct finishes, gray and natural, allow you to choose which color works best for your home.
One more thing to love? The bottom drawer that can store gardening supplies like shears, gloves, and much more. The greenhouse has a fir wood frame and transparent polycarbonate panels, which in addition to being durable, are light-diffusing and insulating for more successful growth.
On either side, there’s a bolt that can open both the roof and the sides for ventilation. Inside the greenhouse, variety is the name of the game: There are three shelves to the right and open space on the left for an extra tall plant. The bummer is that shelves are fixed, so you can’t adjust them as certain plants grow.
The included anti-falling devices will help prevent the greenhouse from tipping over. The greenhouse can also be used outside. If you decide to place it outdoors, you’ll benefit from the four reinforced metal ground brackets and water drainage grooves.

Why You Should Get It
The shelves are adjustable, and there are several light and time options for the grow lights.
Keep in Mind
The grid design of the shelves may require a plastic mat or cardboard to prevent seedlings or smaller plants from falling through.
Grow lights can help your plants receive sufficient sunlight, especially if your greenhouse is tucked away in a dark corner of your house. For the best indoor greenhouse with grow lights, we chose the Bstrip Mini Greenhouse with Grow Light.
This is one of the best options because it’s equipped with four tiers of rigid steel tubing, a durable PVC cover, and an adjustable grow light on every shelf. The cover includes a roll-up door with two ties that keep it secured at the top, allowing you to care for your plants easily.
The grow lights include a multi-function switch with three light modes: yellow, pink, and mixed. It can be set for three, six, or 12 hour timers with five brightness options. This customization will help ensure your plants are getting the exact kind of light they need at all times.
We love that no tools are required for assembly—everything simply snaps into place. Each shelf can be removed, which is helpful for adding shorter plants or allowing extra room for tall plants. The shelves featured a metal grid design, which may require a plastic mat over them if you plan on growing seedlings or smaller plants.

Why You Should Get It
There is a clear tray that fits inside the main tray, so you can lift it out and check on the progress of your seedlings’ roots.
Keep in Mind
Having five small trays to tend to may be more tedious than one large tray.
Finding the best environment for starting seeds indoors is important because this stage can make or break your plant’s success. We love the Bonviee 5-Pack Seed Starter Tray Seedling Starter Kits because it helps create ideal conditions for your seeds to thrive.
The lids have vents that can be adjusted to control the temperature and humidity of each tray. Another feature we love is the clear seed tray that you can lift out of the main tray to easily check on your seedlings’ progress. Each tray is equipped with 12 pods, totaling 60 pods total.
The helpful part about having them separated into different trays is that you don’t have to carve out a large surface to start such a high volume of seeds—you can place them in different areas of your home. Having to tend to so many different trays, however, may make plant care more tedious for some.

Why You Should Get It
This affordable structure, which comes in three or four tiers, has a small footprint that doesn’t take up too much space.
Keep in Mind
The shelving isn’t adjustable.
The Pure Garden 3-Tier Greenhouse is ideal for those who are new to gardening, both because of its affordability and its small footprint. Indoor greenhouses can take up a lot of space—this one is focused on the vertical versus the horizontal in the form of three or four tiers.
The structure is made of sturdy iron tubing that’s been powder coated to protect it from rust and corrosion if you choose to put it outside. It’s covered in a heat-trapping PVC cover with a zippered roll-up door for easy access to plants, plus a tie strap to keep it open when needed.
The wire shelving unfortunately can’t be adjusted, though you can easily remove shelving if you’re trying to grow a tall plant and need some extra height. No tools are required for assembly, which is always a win.
Product Details: Dimensions: 27.5 x 19 x 50 or 27.5 x 19 x 63 inches | Material: Metal and polyvinyl chloride | Grow Lights Included: No
Why You Should Get It
This greenhouse is more attractive than the more industrial options, comes in two colors, and has two adjustable shelves for versatility.
Keep in Mind
There aren’t pre-drilled holes for assembly.
The Outsunny Hobby Greenhouse marries form and function: Though it operates as a greenhouse, it’s less industrial looking, so you can keep it somewhere like your living room without it being an eyesore.
It’s made out of wood and comes in two colors—a neutral gray and a brighter (yet still natural!) orange. Within the frame are transparent polycarbonate panels that help effectively diffuse light and maintain the ideal temperature for your plants through humidity-creating insulation.
There are three tiers: two adjustable shelves, plus the bottom shelf. This allows for flexibility depending on the rate at which different plants in the greenhouse are growing. The double doors are latched to keep them in place and can easily be opened for pruning, watering, and misting.
If you choose to bring it outdoors, the pointed roof helps prevent water accumulation, and its ability to open provides ventilation, letting fresh air and sunshine in. The one thing we don’t like about this greenhouse is a lack of pre-drilled holes, which makes assembly a little more tricky. Still, users typically find the process easy enough.

The pop up design makes it easy to store in small spaces when not in use.
Keep in Mind
It doesn't have a floor.

The pop up design allows you to fold it down compactly when not in use. There are three different sizes to choose from: 52, 63.7, or 85 inches tall.
Lightweight yet sturdy, the cover is made from 600D Oxford and double-layer PE mesh fabric you can see through.Regardless of size, each greenhouse comes with a door that can be unzipped and rolled up for access and ventilation. This greenhouse also has two micro mesh windows for even more ventilation.
If you want to take it outside, you can thanks to the included stakes and ropes that will increase stability and wind resistance. Keep in mind that this indoor greenhouse doesn’t have a floor.

Why You Should Get It
Reinforced polyethylene and powder-coated steel ensure durability, both inside and out.
Keep in Mind
This size is intended for seed starting trays and small-to-medium pots, and none of the other sizes are outfitted with wheels.
Whether you live in a small space or keep a rotation of plants with different light needs, having a greenhouse with wheels that lock into place is undeniably useful. The Vivosun Mini 4-Tier Greenhouse is made out of powder-coated steel, has four tiers, and is 19 inches deep (enough space for seed starting trays and small-to-medium pots).
It comes with two polyethylene covers (so you have one extra) that checks plenty of boxes, particularly if you decide to transport your indoor greenhouse to the outside: UV protection, water protection, anti-oxidation, and cold-resistance. Plus, the covers are designed with a grid of green reinforcing fibers for additional durability.
Watering and misting are a breeze—simply unzip the door, roll it up, and secure it with the attached tie to open. No tools are needed to assemble the rack thanks to included connectors. To keep the cover in place, all you have to do is use the fixed ropes on the corners to tie it to the structure.
It’s worth noting that while there are other sizes of this greenhouse available, this is the only one with wheels.

Why You Should Get It
Elegantly designed and simple to assemble, this is one of the larger glass indoor greenhouses.
Keep in Mind
It’s a splurge.
Terrariums are essentially mini greenhouses. They’re usually made with thick tempered glass panels instead of polycarbonate, which allows for more sunlight but less humidity.
Arguably the most aesthetically pleasing option on our list, the H Potter Terrarium Planter Freestanding Wardian Case has great details like cream powder coated metal, architectural arches, and stately finials.
While assembly is required, the process is simple and can be done without tools or even instructions. The greenhouse arrives in three pieces: table, cabinet, and roof. The glass panels for the walls and roof first need to be slid into place before you stack the pieces together.
To take care of your plants or provide them with ventilation, all you have to do is lift the hinged side of the roof and insert the hook on either side into the eye so it stays up. If needed, you can also remove the entire roof.
The interior of this greenhouse is 28 x 14 x 24 inches, which is larger than most glass options. Because of this, however, it also comes with a larger price tag.
Product Details: Dimensions: 28 x 14 x 49 inches | Material: Powder coated metal and glass | Grow Lights Included: No
The Bottom Line
The Barrina Mini Greenhouse is our pick for the best indoor greenhouse because it comes with all the accessories you need to maximize your plants’ success. If you’re on a budget, the Ohuhu Indoor Greenhouse is well-made and packed with small details like a roll-up door and hanging rod.
What to Know About Indoor Greenhouses Before Shopping
Dimensions
According to Sears, it’s important to consider the dimensions of an indoor greenhouse before purchasing. “You’ll want to ensure you have enough space for it to not only fit in your home, but to fit your plants as they continue to develop and get larger,” she says.
Material
“The material of your indoor greenhouse is vital to the success of your plants,” Sears says. Some are made out of transparent glass or plastic to allow plenty of natural light in, while others have a dark exterior and a reflective interior so the grow lights can give your plants as much light as possible.
“If you’re setting up a grow site that will house plants year-round or every winter, a more permanent structure with glass, plastic, wood, or firmer materials might be just fine,” McEnaney says.
“If you need the flexibility to move your indoor greenhouse between rooms or are living in a smaller space, there are some fantastic tent-like greenhouses that you can set up and tear down quickly.”
Grow Lights
Unless the greenhouse has access to strong natural light, you’ll want to make sure you have grow lights “especially for those looking to start seeds indoors,” Sears says. Some indoor greenhouses come with grow lights, such as the Bstrip Mini Greenhouse with Grow Light.
You should use grow lights with red and blue light, which together have the same effects as natural light. Make sure you opt for LED bulbs as well, since they use less power (so you save money) and put out less heat (so you don’t burn the plants).
Having a grow light with a timer is useful because you can control the amount of light your plants are getting without manually having to turn the light on and off. Other useful features include adjustability, dimming, and different light modes.
Your Questions, Answered
How much are indoor greenhouses?
“First determine how much interior space you have to grow and which plants you want to grow indoors to help inform the size you’ll need and the potential cost,” Sears says. Basic greenhouses like the Pure Garden Greenhouse can be as low as $40 to $50, while larger and more technical options might be $1,000 or more.
How do you heat an indoor greenhouse?
The primary way to heat an indoor greenhouse is with good old fashioned sunshine, but sometimes that isn’t enough. Grow lights, heat mats, and weather stripping can all help keep your plants warm. To make sure they don’t overheat, a thermo-hygrometer can measure the temperature and humidity.
What plants grow best in an indoor greenhouse?
In general, you should plant more compact varieties—if not, they’ll take up more than their fair share of space and the others will suffer. Another consideration is the climate, since you can’t fully customize the growing conditions in a greenhouse to each individual plant.
That said, seedlings will always grow well in an indoor greenhouse, as well as perennials, warm-season vegetables, herbs, tropical plants, and flowering plants.
